Are Your Gas Prices Too High? Find Out How to Save Gas

September 2nd, 2010 by gascan

Even with today’s high gas prices, there are creative ways to save on the cost of gas. Save gas is not just a celebration for your wallet. It’s a way that you can get more involved in preserving our country. I don’t mean to sound patriotic, but think about it. Wouldn’t you like to swim in the ocean without concern of contamination? Maybe you enjoy running outside but are afraid of the harmful affects of smog? The list can go on forever when talking about the benefits of preserving gas and making attempts to live more economically when gas prices continue to rise.

Here are some creative ways you can save on your weekly or bi-weekly gas prices.

1. Ride your bike to work. If you live close enough to your job, this is a great way to achieve your newly frugal life. Riding a bike also allows you to get a great workout before going to work.

2. Carpool. Some companies provide monetary benefits for those that choose to carpool to work. If your company does not have a plan in place for carpoolers, take a trip to the Human Resources department and offer to set up one. Explain the many benefits carpooling has on the city and how the company may be recognized for it’s environmental awareness actions.

3. Turn off your Air Conditioner. I know this may be difficult during hot summer days, but as try to take the heat as much as you can. If you must turn on your air conditioner, keep it at the lowest setting. You’ll still get the cool air you desire, which may be just enough to get to your destination. Parking under a shade will also help to reduce the amount of air condition that’s needed.

4. Remove all heavy loads. It takes more gas to pull heavy items. Opt to put heavy loads in the car when needed and remove soon after you are finished with using it.

5. Drive at a slow steady speed. Racing your car uses more gas than you may want. When pulling out, drive at a smooth pace and increase your speed gradually until you get to your optimum speed. Slow at a steady pace also.

6. Fill up at the cheapest gas station around. Take a day to locate the cheapest gas station in your area and try to only fill up at that particular station. Note: gas that’s of low quality may be cheap but they are not necessarily good for your car.

7. Carpool for Kid’s events. Make agreements with your parents in the neighborhood to take turns carpooling. This not only saves you time, but the amount you save in gas can be huge.

I’ve given you a few creative ideas on how to save on gas prices. I’d like to see you come up with more. Try to have fun with this. Being frustrated with constantly increasing prices will not help a bit.

Each episode investigates the background of usually one particular modern invention and how it came into being. These explorations are an attempt to locate the “connections” between various historical figures who seemingly had nothing to do with each other in their own times, however once connected, these same figures combined to produce some of the most profound impacts on our modern day world; in a “1+1=3″ type of way. It is this type of investigation that is the core idea behind the Knowledge Web project, whereby sophisticated software is being developed to attempt to discover these subtle interconnections automatically. Take me down To the paradise city Where the grass is green And the girls are pretty Oh, won’t you please take me home Take me down To the paradise city Where the grass is green And the girls are pretty Oh, won’t you please take me home Just an urchin living under the street I’m a hard case that’s tough to beat I’m your charity case So buy me something to eat I’ll pay you at another time Take it to the end of the line Rags to riches or so they say You got to – keep pushing for the fortune and fame you know It’s all a gamble when it’s just a game You treat it like a capital crime Everybody’s doing their time Take me down To the paradise city Where the grass is green And the girls are pretty Oh, won’t you please take me home Take me down To the paradise city Where the grass is green And the girls are pretty Take me home Strapped in the chair of the city’s gas chamber Why I’m here I can’t quite remember The surgeon general says it’s hazardous to breathe I’d have another cigarette but I can’t see Tell me who you’re going to believe Take me down To the paradise city Where the grass is green And the girls are pretty Take me home Take me down To the paradise city Where the grass is green And the girls are pretty Oh, won’t you please take me home So far away (4x) Captain America’s been torn apart Now he’s a court jester with a broken heart He said – Turn me around and take me back to the start I must be losing my mind – “Are you blind?!” I’ve seen it all a million times Take me

What is Hypermiling? Find Out How You Can Save Money on Gas

August 30th, 2010 by gascan

What is hypermiling? Hypermiling consists of several ways to maximize the amount of miles you can achieve from a gallon of gas. With the continuing increases in the price of fuel, these techniques to save gas are quickly gaining popularity among consumers.

These techniques can vary in many ways. Modifying your driving behavior, such as driving slower, and keeping your vehicle well maintained with tune ups are two ways to maximize your savings. The type of vehicle you drive makes a difference also. These methods, when used properly, can help to increase fuel efficiency and increase the miles per gallon of gas used.

Some techniques are considered to be extreme and dangerous, but most are just common sense methods. Some may even be illegal as well, such as coasting through stop signs. When considering the option to use hypermiling techniques, carefully consider the safety of the method as well as the fuel efficiency. The safety of yourself, your passengers and other motorist should always be the primary concern anytime you get behind the wheel.

Some of the most common hypermiling techniques are to not accelerate quickly, combine errands to not make as many trips, and coast whenever safely possible. Making sure that your vehicle is in top working order with properly inflated tires is another way to get the most miles out of your gas.

Which ever methods you choose, keep track of your gas mileage to see how much you have improved. Continue to try safe new methods to keep increasing the miles per gallon. You could even make a game out of your success and challenge yourself to do better with each and every time you go to the gas station to fill your tank.

So now that the question “what is hypermiling?” has been answered, you should try some of the methods to save yourself some money on gas. See how much you can increase your fuel efficiency.

Gas Furnace Prices and How One Can Learn the Wrong Information

August 29th, 2010 by gascan

I am recovering from a mild stroke that I suffered last year. For the most part, the physical impairments have been resolved through very intensive physical and occupational therapies. I learned a great deal about my self-determination during this medical crisis. One area of my life that remains a bit foggy is how my brain processes information. Currently, it seems to leave out crucial information when I am trying to problem-solve anything that comes up. My house has needed a new furnace for some years now. With the cost of fuel being so high, it made sense for me to order a new furnace and have it installed. I took my time and did some comparative shopping on gas furnace prices for my house. I took notes, asked lots more questions, and took more notes. I was determined to plan this through correctly. I achieved this, almost. Though you can‘t see me doing it, I am smiling to myself and shaking my head in wonder and amusement.

Here’s the thing: I did all of this intensive research on gas furnace prices, and my house isn’t equipped for gas ! Dear, Sweet Lord ! My furnace system runs on fuel oil. I had all of the right information for the wrong kind of system. My brain had simply not registered this important point. I felt embarrassed at first, then just humored by the entire thing. Fortunately, I have lived in this community for 35 years and I have friends everywhere. We all just had a good laugh, then I started the same process over for an oil furnace upgrade.

After this event, I visited with the local stroke support group at the hospital, the following week. I told them about all of the planning that went in to the process for purchasing a new gas furnace. I told them about the comparative shopping I did on gas furnace prices and things such as energy/fuel efficiency ratings, costs saved through professional installation etc… Others in attendance were asking me all kinds of questions and I was answering them. Eventually, the doctor in attendance figured that something wasn’t quite what it seemed and he asked the question. With as much humor and dignity that I could muster, I told them the punch line and everybody started howling. SOme people laughed so hard and so long that they were crying. Recovery from a stroke is a deeply individual experience but the trials and tribulations are common. In any case, some of my fellows now have all the necessary information to make an informed decision about purchasing new gas furnaces.

How to Achieve Gas Savings in Your Home

August 26th, 2010 by gascan

There are various ways in which you can achieve gas savings in your home. Gas can be saved while cooking as well as while heating the home.

You can use the following tips to save gas while heating up or cooking inside your home:

o Adjusting air-conditioning: If you have central air-conditioning, and there are rooms that you do not use much, cover the vent in that room and shut the door.

o Use dark drapes to keep out unwanted sunshine in summer and in the winter let maximum sunlight inside to warm up your rooms naturally.

o Use solar panels. Initial investment may be high but it reduces fuel and utility bills dramatically in the long run.

o Minimize energy loss through cracks in windows, ceilings and doors. Seal these cracks as soon as possible with caulking material.

o If you live in a cold area, use dark colors for your roof and sidings as they absorb more energy and if you live in hot areas use lighter colors as they reflect more energy.

o Do not preheat your oven unless your recipe needs preheating and increase gas savings.

o Use energy efficient light bulbs as they save on light usage.

o Turning your thermostat even one degree lesser can save much energy over a month and increase gas savings.

o Light your stove only when you are ready to cook and ingredients are handy.

o Pressure cooking saves cooking time and fuel usage.

o Avoid using too much water as it takes longer to cook.

o Reduce flame when boiling starts to save fuel.

o Cover cooking pots and pans with lids to prevent heat form evaporating.

o Use small burner as it uses less energy than a big burner.

o Clean the burner if the flame is orange or yellowish.

o Check for leakages of air under doors and windows.

o Avoid closing and opening windows and doors throughout the day as it lets in cold air. Restrict people entering and leaving through doors as it lets the heated air inside the house escape outside.

o Enable the hot water tank to work at a lesser temperature. While many prefer 120 degrees, 105 degrees may be set comfortably. Check with hot water maintenance personnel if this temperature is safe for the family. If it is, you can save several hundred dollars in your utility bill.

o Avoid dishwasher drying as vessels could air dry and have gas savings.

o Inspect the chimney so it does not let in too much cold air. When the chimney is not being used, remember to keep the flue closed.
